Switch on subtitles for more information Medium wave (MW) is the part of the medium frequency (MF) radio band used mainly for AM radio broadcasting. For Europe the MW band ranges from 526.5 kHz to 1606.5 kHz and in North America an extended MW broadcast band goes from 535 kHz to 1705 kHz Medium wave signals have the property of following the curvature of the earth (the groundwave) at all times, and also refracting off the ionosphere at night (skywave). This makes this frequency band ideal for both local and continent-wide service, depending on the time of day. For example, during the day a radio receiver in the state of Colorado is able to receive reliable but weak signals from high-power stations such as 770 KKOB, or 610 KNML 500 miles away from their towers in Albuquerque, New Mexico, due to groundwave propagation. The effectiveness of groundwave signals largely depends on ground conductivity and higher conductivity results in better propagation. At night, the same receiver may pick up signals as far away as 1110 KFAB in Nebraska reliably, depending on atmospheric noise and man-made interference. Note: No responsibility accepted due to injury or damage that may be caused in building or using this Radio.
Another medium wave radio station closes down in the UK. Global's 1548 AM transmitter is taken off the air . Back in October 1973 we heard Kenny Everett, Maggie Norden, Robin Houston, Dave Cash, Tony Myatt and Simon Booker and more.

Vintronics 1w AM / MW mono audio transmitter (show and tell) tested at our studios Visit sjvbroadcastservices.com for more details on this product This AM Transmitter operates between 1024KHz and 1600KHz in the Medium Waveband (AM Band) and is designed to be a reliable and stable unit. It is capable of delivering over 1 watt of RMS power into a short length aerial. It can usually deliver 1.5 watts cleanly driven to 100% modulation. The Transmitter circuit design employs a Colpitts FET oscillator in a Phase-locked loop circuit for accuracy and ease of frequency selection. It is also very stable and therefore does not drift off frequency. The Phase Lock circuit provides selection in 1KHz steps, so that the unit can be used in either Europe, which has 9KHz spacing between channels, or in the USA and other parts of the World where 10kHz is used between channels. A rugged Power MOSFET is also used on the RF output stage, which drives the output toroid and variable tuning capacitor. High voltage rated components are used in the output section. Audio modulation is series-derived using a pair of Darlington Power Transistors. These are in turn driven by an audio level control chip which allows the transmitter to achieve maximum modulation at all times, whatever the audio source and nominal level is, within reason. (CD player, mixer, PC etc) Housed in a Steel box with ABS front and rear panels. Ventilation holes to improve air flow for component cooling. A fan is used on higher output models. Comes with 4.5 metre cable as suitable Aerial. More information is available from sjvbroadcastservices.com CAUTION A licence is required to operate this equipment in the UK.
In Europe many maritime stations are there in North America..mostly the 160 amateur radio band

This is a small AM transmitter covering the medium wave band. It's ideal for use with vintage valve radios when the digital switchover comes and DAB radio is the only choice.

In the early 1990s BBC Radio 1 was simulcast on FM and 1053/1089 kHz medium wave. MW was closed down at night to save power. This message was played before the transmitters were switched off.
This video demonstrates that mechanical waves need a medium to travel through.
Easter Monday March 24, 2008: RTÉ Radio has closed down its last Medium Wave transmitter at Tullamore, County Offaly, after providing the radio signal for the station's programmes for the last 82 years. The move has been taken, for what's described as 'economic and environmental' reasons. But some listeners have complained that it will further reduce their variety of programmes.

I've finally discovered the source of the dreadful interference on medium and short wave radio...
How increase the poor gain of an inside rod antenna by using a loop antenna. It is composed by a 93cm hula hoop, 11 turns of 0,4mm wire and a 700 pF variable capacitor with insulated knob. The coil and the capacitor are connected in parallel. The loop antenna will work in the range 280-700 kHz but if you want go down with the frequency you can add a selectable (by a switch) 680 pF capacitor in parallel to the variable capacitor. In this case the frequency comes down another 80 kHz.
Specifications below: This is a junkbox project, I built this transmitter from the parts I found at home. Original circuit from this site: 🤍 Modification: This transmitter is built for medium wave band (530 - 1600 kHz), tube is a PL504 line output pentode from an old TV set. The transmitter is tuned to 1379 kHz (crystal stabilized) I did not test the maximum range, but with a 3m long wire I can clearly receive from 20m. The modulator transformer is driven by a very simple one mosfet audio amplifier.

Only $5 for 10 PCBs and every new member get $5 bonus. + Express 24 hour / 48 hour service on 🤍 I have often seen the need for a low power DIY AM transmitter for the MW band, that would allow me to stream music throughout the house and test and use the tube radios that I restore. I wanted to make it an addition to my ‘under the shelf’ test modules. So, off I went, looking for ideas and inspiration for the design. It didn’t take me long to realise that what was available was either incredibly simple and low quality, or too complex for my needs. Then I found Charles Wenzel’s website (linked below). Reading through the description of his low power AM transmitter project, I realised that I would probably not be capable of designing a better circuit, so I did the next best thing: I wrote to him and asked for permission to do a PCB project build of his design. He kindly approved, and here we are. I made a few changes - as we all do - but the principle is his. The possible errors are all mine. The transmitter complies with the legal power limits and the initial tests prove that the range is more than sufficient for my needs. Building this project also led me to think further about how I can improve on my build, and that is something I will be doing in the future. When I am satisfied that I have a ‘final’ design, I will share the PCBs on PCBWay’s website, should you wish to order your own. Enjoy the video.
