Since the market launch in 2015, around 60,000 examples of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class have been delivered worldwide. The growth rate in China was in double figures. Alongside China, the main sales markets in recent years have been Russia, South Korea, the USA and Germany. The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is set to continue this success story. It combines the perfection and high-tech solutions of the only recently presented Mercedes-Benz flagship model with the exclusivity and tradition of Maybach. The 18 cm longer wheelbase compared to the long variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class entirely benefits the rear. Thanks to Executive Seats as standard and the Chauffeur package, the rear section becomes a comfortable working or resting area. They are complemented by exclusive details such as large areas of trim on the rear of the front seats and between the two rear passengers. Little has changed on the S-class for 2023, but Mercedes-Maybach will produce a limited-edition S680 by Virgil Abloh in tribute to the late fashion designer. He had collaborated with Mercedes-Maybach on concept vehicles in the past, but this production model—which will be limited to just 150 examples—is street ready. The black-and-tan color scheme pays homage to the Project Maybach concept car with cool monoblock wheels rendered in the same tan color. The two-tone theme continues throughout the car's luxurious interior. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hood of every S580 sedan is a 496-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Going with the S680 swaps in a 621-hp 6.0-liter V-12. All models will come with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The V-8 makes 33 more horsepower than the old S560 from 2020, and it packs quite a punch. During our testing, the S580 rocketed to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. But that's not really the most impressive thing about the Maybach S-class. During our time with the car, we were impressed with the ride quality and the nearly silent cabin—we recorded an extremely low 64 decibels inside the car while cruising at 70 mph. The V-12's power rating is the same as the 2020 S650 model and does not benefit from a 48-volt hybrid system, but we haven't had a chance to test the new one yet. An air suspension and an active sound cancellation system are both standard in the new model, which helps the car deliver a silky, ultra-quiet ride; the S-class also offers rear-wheel steering which should help with navigating this big sedan through tight city streets. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The Maybach S-class has a seven-inch-longer wheelbase than the already-large Benz-branded S-class sedan, which provides even more stretch-out space inside its leather-lined cabin. So many luxury features are standard in the Maybach we couldn't possibly list them all here, but all models will come with exquisite leather on virtually every interior surface; a 64-color interior ambient lighting system; heated and ventilated front seats with massage and four-position memory settings; heated rear seats with power adjustments and massage; an air ionizing system with a signature fragrance; and a panoramic sunroof. For buyers who intend to be chauffeured, Maybach can add the optional Executive Rear Seat Plus package, which includes rear-seat folding tables, an extended center console, additional rear-seat wood trim, and temperature controlled cup holders. Verdict With a luxury interior that seats seven and 603 tarmac-wrinkling horsepower, the GLS63 is an SUV that’s been turned up to mega. Overview There’s a tiny niche that exists at the intersection of three-row crossovers, luxury cars, and muscle trucks, which is where the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLS63 sits, rumbling threateningly. This ultra-SUV has the panache of an S-class sedan crossed with the soul of an AMG passenger car thanks to its 603-horsepower, 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8. While its overall size and shape are identical to the Benz-branded GLS-class, the AMG version comes with a specially-tuned air suspension that seasons it with a spicier on-road personality to go along with power that jams you into the seatback. We’d hardly call its moves race-car sharp, but it delivers more than a hint of AMG flavor on a twisty road. The cabin is richly appointed and the first and second rows are particularly spacious and similar to that of rivals such as the BMW X7 M50i. But if you’re looking for maximum interior space in your steroidal SUV consider the 682-hp Cadillac Escalade V-Series. What's New for 2023? The AMG brand’s biggest bruiser rolls into 2023 with nary a change to its powertrain, chassis, styling, interior, or equipment. Pricing and Which One to Buy GLS63 4Matic: $140,050 Although the GLS63's starting price is deep into the six-figure realm, we'd still suggest a few options sure to please the whole family. For one thing, the Warmth and Comfort package is a nice bundle for those in northern climates, as it adds heated door panels, heated armrests, and a heated center console. We'd also suggest the Energizing package which includes the in-cabin fragrance diffuser and the Acoustic Comfort package, and also adds increased cabin insulation for a quieter interior. Mercedes-AMG also offers a host of standalone features that may catch your eye, including the bonkers 23-inch multi-spoke forged wheels that look just perfect when framed within the GLS63's muscular wheel wells. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hood of the GLS63 is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine that makes a whopping 603 horsepower with the help of a 48-volt hybrid system. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a nine-speed automatic transmission and air suspension. We were blown away by the GLS63's performance at our test track as it out-accelerated several hot sports cars we've tested, tearing off a blistering 3.6-second zero-to-60-mph run. For comparison, the old GLS63—which made a mere 577 horsepower—managed a none-too-shabby 4.3-second zero-to-60-mph run. As impressed as we were with the GLS's acceleration, we can't say the same for its driving dynamics. The ride is firm, especially on the optional 23-inch wheels, but that firmness doesn't translate to a feeling of unflappable precision when cornering, though it does offers plenty of grip to have some fun with on a twisty road. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA estimates that the GLS63's fuel economy is a dismal 14 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. On our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test route the GLS63 delivered a decent 22 mpg; the GLS63's main rival—the BMW X7 M50i—managed 24 mpg in the same test. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Three rows of seating and interior styling that's slightly sportier versus the Benz-branded GLS-class sets the GLS63 apart from two-row SUV powerhouses such as the BMW X5 M and the Audi RS Q8. Like those competitors, the GLS63 is gorgeously appointed inside. Soft leather covers nearly every square inch of the cabin, and those areas that aren't leather-wrapped are treated to genuine wood trim and tastefully applied meal trim; buttons and knobs are rendered in a rich-looking metallic finish. Front-seat occupants can enjoy a massage while blasting down the Interstate, and passenger space is generous in the second row, which can also be equipped with heated seats and power sunshades. Lows Heart-stopping prices, snug rear-seat headroom, confusing infotainment interface. Verdict With four-passenger room and awesome performance the AMG GT is the great white shark of luxury performance sedans. Overview The 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT sedan synthesizes performance and presence in a way that few four-doors can. Mechanically, it’s based on the E-class wagon not the GT sports car, but no matter—it behaves much the same as the two-seater. The inline-six in the GT43 and GT53 models have plenty of muscle but its the twin-turbo V-8-powered GT63 models that are the apex predators of the lineup. Handling is satisfyingly sporty for such a large vehicle—and brilliant in the most aggressive models. The fact that you can bring three passengers along on your joy rides is an added plus. Despite the car's performance potential, it doesn't skimp on luxury; the interior is nicely tailored in fine materials and dotted with modern conveniences. Rear-seat headroom isn't as generous here as it is in the E63 sedan, but the GT's low fastback roofline offsets that deficit with a more exotic look. What's New for 2023? The V-8–powered GT63 and GT63 S models are back for 2023 after taking a year-long break. These high-performance variants of the GT sedan receive the same styling updates that the GT43 and GT53 models received last year. In addition, a range-topping GT63 S E-Performance model joins the lineup with a whopping 830-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain. Pricing and Which One to Buy GT43: $97,050 GT53: $107,850 GT63: $150,350 GT63 S: $171,500 We'd suggest going with the mid-range GT53, which offers plenty of horsepower and a pleasant driving experience. We'd add the Warmth and Comfort package, which adds a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, and rapid-heating elements for the front seats. The Driver Assistance package is also appealing, as it adds a host of technologies including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Then again, we were seduced by the 630-hp GT63 S when we last drove it. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hoods of both the GT43 and GT53 is a robust 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine that features a turbocharger, an intercooler, an electric supercharger, and a small electric motor. From a stop, the electric motor and supercharger fill in the brief lapse in torque delivery before the turbo is spinning out full boost. The 3.0-liter, which packs a combined 429 horsepower in the GT53, snaps necks whenever you touch the accelerator. In our testing the GT53, which features a conventional nine-speed automatic transmission, it accelerated to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and its sporty suspension delivered flat, responsive cornering and sports-car levels of grip. The GT63 and GT63 S are powered by a thunderous 4.0-liter V-8. It’s a technological tour de force with dry-sump oiling, direct injection, and two turbochargers mounted in its V. It's rated at 575 horsepower in the GT63, and cranked up to 630 horsepower in the GT63 S. These models also get a dual-clutch nine-speed automatic transmission and air suspension. In our testing, the GT63 S needed just 2.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. That's as quick as a Porsche Panamera Turbo. An even more powerful GT63 S E-Performance plug-in hybrid model has been confirmed for 2023 and uses a rear-mounted electric motor to boost combined horsepower to a 830 hp. Tarmac everywhere need be worried. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG With such extreme performance, it's no surprise the Mercedes-AMG GT sedan is thirsty, but its EPA fuel-economy estimates aren't as dire as you might expect. Both the GT43 and GT53 are rated for 19/25 mpg city/highway; a GT53 model returned 27 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel economy test. Ratings for the twin-turbo V-8 models have not yet been released.
