But today, only about 200 Ewenki still make a living as herders, and their native tongue has mostly died out. Valian, also known as Wang Ying, is one of the last Ewenki reindeer herders. As most of their people have moved into the cities and assimilated with the Chinese, Valian and her family are doing their best to maintain their people's traditional way of life. "Lamuts", as the Evenks were then called, came from the western shore of the Sea of Okhotsk and settled in the uninhabited mountains along the banks of the Bystraya River. But no matter how their neighbors call these natives of Kamchatka, the Evenks themselves prefer to call themselves "deer people". Among the small peoples there are those who have not assimilated among their many neighbors and have not lost their identity. Their number sometimes does not exceed several thousand, and sometimes hundreds of people. Their way of life over the past thousand years has not changed much. They preserved ancient beliefs, traditions and language. ►All Documentaries: 🤍 ►Subscribe and hit the bell: 🤍 ►Other "Unique Minorities": 🤍

Evenki (Эвэды̄ турэ̄н / Evedȳ turēn) Native to: China, Russia Region: Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang in China; Krasnoyarsk Krai in Russia Ethnicity: Evenks Native speakers: 26,580 (2007–2010) Language family: Tungusic formerly known as Tungus or Solon, is the largest member of the northern group of Tungusic languages, a group which also includes Even, Negidal, and (the more closely related) Oroqen language. The name is sometimes wrongly given as "Evenks". It is spoken by Evenks or Ewenkī(s) in Russia and China. In certain areas the influences of the Yakut and the Buryat languages are particularly strong. The influence of Russian in general is overwhelming (in 1979, 75.2% of the Evenkis spoke Russian, rising to 92.7% in 2002). Evenki children were forced to learn Russian at Soviet residential schools, and returned with a “poor ability to speak their mother tongue...". The Evenki language varies considerably among its dialects, which are divided into three large groups: the northern, the southern and the eastern dialects. These are further divided into minor dialects. A written language was created for Evenkis in the Soviet Union in 1931, first using a Latin alphabet, and from 1937 a Cyrillic one. In China, Evenki is written experimentally in the Mongolian script. The language is generally considered endangered. A film series in three parts, about three generations of Evenki nomadic reindeer herders and hunters who have adjusted to life in harsh conditions and for whom the taiga is home. Nikolai, Sasha, Svetlana, Pasha, Galya... Different branches of the Armchemku family live in the heartland of Siberia, on the eastern side of the Yenisey river, in the midst of the endless taiga. They are Evenki (Tungus), nomadic reindeer herders and hunters. Following the different seasons of the year they roam the taiga with their reindeer, through the long, bitter winter and the short hot summer. Their way of life is still traditional, even though the number of Evenki speaking people is diminishing the whole time and the old clan organization is vanishing. There is conflict between the Evenki way of life, a culture in close contact with nature, and the ways of the rest of society. The dominant culture does not always leave enough scope for alternative ways of life. Nikolai, Sasha, Svetlana, Pasha, Galya... 🤍 The Evenk hitch is a really useful knot for quickly attaching a fixed line to an upright such as a tree - ideal for quickly pitching a tarp. It's also useful for setting up a hanging line under your tarp (see 🤍 for tips on how to get organised under your tarp). When you need to air your sleeping bag in the morning, you can use this hitch to string up a bit of paracord between two trees in the sunshine (use a round turn and two half hitches or a taut tarp hitch at the other end). Similarly it's useful for even popping up a quick drying line in camp when you come to wash your clothes on extended wilderness trips. The knot tied is effectively a slippery figure-of-eight knot with the added feature of a quick release. Used by the Evenk reindeer herders of Siberia, this knot developed as a quick way to tie off reindeer to trees without needing to expose your hands to the cold for very long, tying other fiddly knots. This video was recorded by Kristen Tcherneshoff in Yakutsk, Sakha Republic, Russia. In this video, Varvara shares stories of her childhood: growing up reindeer herding, the first time she saw a Russian man from the west, and being gifted a mirror. Even is a Tungusic language spoken by around 5,700 native speakers of the Evens people in the Russian Far East. It is spoken primarily by reindeer herding communities from the area between the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, the western River Lena, the northern Arctic coast, and the southern River Aldan. The Even language is taught in pre-school and elementary school alongside Russian in this region. There have been three orthographic systems implemented to write Even: an early attempt at replicating the Cyrillic alphabet, a Latin alphabet, and the currently used modern Cyrillic script. Even has vowel harmony, where vowels of a word have to be the same class, and there is a uniquely extensive system of possessive forms (where something can be personal, returnable, or simply have the value of possessiveness). Even changes with suffix agglutination, meaning that the features of suffix conjugation, rather than the addition of more modifying words, change the traits of an utterance. A Chinese anthropology documentary which tells the story of Weijia, an Evenki poet and artist, to reflect the sinification measures and hunting ban on the Evenki reindeer herders, an ethnic minority in China. It also shows the ecological crisis caused by rampant poachers. Rent or purchase to watch full film: 🤍 SYNOPSIS Moose, called “kandahan” by the locals, is the largest animal in the Greater Khingan mountains forest. It is beautiful, strapping and, sensitive. Besides, it is the means of transportation for the Evenki people and is regarded as a symbol of good luck and happiness. But with the ecological destruction and rampant poaching, it is hard to see a moose again. However, The Last Moose of Aoluguya is not a documentary about the moose. What the camera really follows, is an Evenki hunter Weijia, who has moose’s lonely temperament. He feels lost after the government banned hunting. He drinks and writes poems in memory of a bygone age and the days with the moose. Weijia decides to seek for the moose’s footprints into the forest in the spring. After that, he has a brief love affair and moves to Hainan. How does the lonely hunter handle his situation in the new century? Where is the last moose? Infinite boundless, vanished beast, and the last hunter, seem to unified in front of the camera. The Last Moose of Aoluguya is the last documentary of Gu Tao's Evenki trilogy.
