That's the hope of Economy and Climate Minister Robert Habeck, as he visits two countries in the region, both of which are looking toward 'green hydrogen' production. Habeck was in Namibia on Monday to support a ten-billion dollar hydrogen-project from a German firm. A day later, he landed in South Africa. The War in Ukraine and the resulting loss of Russian natural gas imports has sent Habeck and the German government scrambling for alternatives. The members of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Cabinet met in Brandenburg on Tuesday for a two-day summit after the summer break to discuss the energy crisis as well as Germany's security strategy. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is also at Schloss Meseberg to meet with Scholz. The two are set to discuss the challenges posed by the Russian war in Ukraine. "We will discuss the security situation very intensively," Scholz told reporters before the summit. "We will also take the opportunity to carefully begin the discussion on the national security strategy." He added that Sanchez, who has already set out such a strategy for Spain, would be invited to participate in the discussion. What did Scholz say before the summit? Regarding the energy crisis, the chancellor said that his government acted quickly to get ahead of the problem, pointing to the filling of Germany's gas storage facilities ahead of schedule. "Coal power plants are being connected to the power grid again, bit by bit, and as you know, we are also looking into whether it makes sense to restart nuclear power plants for the winter through a careful stress test," Scholz said. "We're in a much better situation now than was foreseeable several months ago and we are much more able to deal with the threats coming from Russia over the cutting off of gas supplies," he said. The chancellor said his cabinet was also looking to introduce a new package to protect households and businesses from the worst impacts of the crisis. Germany scrambles to avoid recession amid inflation and energy crisis | DW News

The German government is vowing rapid cash-assistance for small- and mid-size companies facing massive energy-bills this winter. The German economy-minister meeting today with industry groups from across the country. They've been pressuring Berlin for help as energy-prices soar to record-heights and leave them unable to pass costs along to consumers. Some firms are already lowering production. Industry-leaders are meanwhile warning of growing insolvencies. Economists are now projecting a 'winter recession' for Germany saying the economy will contract in 2023. Recent figures are already drawing an increasingly grim outlook: New data confirms an annual inflation rate of almost 8-percent in August. Higher prices cut into purchasing power making it difficult for consumers to afford the same things they could a year prior. Soaring energy-costs are driving that inflation led by natural gas: The European benchmark is now three-quarters more expensive than it was this time last year. Russia's war on Ukraine is largely responsible for that trend. Another worrying figure is the growing number of insolvencies in Germany or companies that cannot cover their debts or liabilities. That figure rose 6.6 percent in July from the prior-month those are the last fresh figures we have. Qatar strikes LNG deal with Germany | DW News

29.11.2022

The deal struck with QatarEnergy is set to go into effect in 2026 and last 15 years. Berlin is seeking to replace Russian gas, which used to cover over one half of Germany's annual supply. 🤍 Qatar's state-owned oil and gas company has agreed to send Germany two million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year, QatarEnergy's CEO said on Tuesday. Germany consumes around 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, a little over half of which had been coming from Russia. The deal struck with QatarEnergy covers around 2.7 billion cubic meters per year. Qatar aims to "contribute to efforts to support energy security in Germany and Europe", Energy Minister and QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida al-Kaabi. "Germany represents the largest gas market in Europe ... and we are committed to support its energy security," Saad al-Kaabi. What do we know about the deal? The gas will arrive from Ras Laffan in Qatar to Germany's LNG terminal of Brunsbüttel in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. Gas will be sold to the US company Conoco Phillips, which will deliver it to Germany. Supply is set to begin in 2026, and will continue for at least 15 years. China, Japan and South Korea are currently the main market for Qatar's gas. Last week, Doha struck a 27-year agreement to ship four million tons of LNG a year to China. Negotiations between Berlin and Doha had previously struggled as Germany was reticent to sign a long-term gas deal. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that although Berlin would have nothing against signing a deal that lasts 20 years or more, companies have to be "aware of Germany's long-term climate goals." Why is Germany importing Qatari gas? Moscow has slashed gas supplies to European countries over their support for Kyiv following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Germany, once a major importer, hasn't received any Russian gas since August. The country is building five LNG terminals in order to replace Russian supplies. Currently, much of Germany's gas supply comes from or via Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium. Berlin has also temporarily reactivated old oil- and coal-fired power stations and extended the life of the country's last three nuclear power plants. Germany is building pipelines that are to connect the 4 LNG terminals under construction to the national grid. Projects like this would take years to materialize, but the Ukraine war and Germany's energy needs have changed things dramatically. But it has also created a rift within the European Union. How Germany got stuck paying for Russia's war. Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has sanctioned much of Russia’s economy, but Russia’s natural gas trade remains untouched. The EU gets nearly a quarter of its energy from natural gas, and almost half of that comes from Russia, the world’s largest gas exporter. As the EU’s largest economy, Germany is Russia’s biggest customer, paying Russia’s state-owned gas company 200 million euros. So while Germany has even sent Ukraine weapons, in a historic shift of military policy, through its gas supply Germany is helping to pay for the war it’s trying to stop. It’s inherently hard to pivot away from piped gas. Unlike oil and coal, which can be rerouted, gas pipelines cost billions, take years to build, and physically connect producer and buyer directly, making them long-term commitments. That was the origin of Germany’s dependence on Russian gas, and over time it’s only deepened. Today, as the world tries to punish Russia through sanctions, that dependence is getting in the way.
